THE first local heroes to be featured on as our 'Firm Favourites' — hailing the best businesses in Salford – are staff at The Kingfisher fish and chip shop.

The chippy opened in Market Way in 1985 and is managed by the third generation of the Cartwright family, Angela Owen. Her grandparents, Ann and Ray Cartwright, passed it on to Angela’s dad Philip – and it’s still going strong.

It’s a community-focused eatery with a café and a takeaway offering events throughout the year.

Angela, who has been working in the chippy since she was eight – a regular in peeling potatoes – said: “We are at the heart of the community and have some wonderful customers who are also our friends.

“It’s a privilege to be recognised as the first ‘Firm Favourite’ for the Salford City News and the team who work here are amazing. We are like a family and that’s how it should be.

“The business has been going for more than 30 years and we couldn’t have done it without our loyal customers. We see the families come and go and meet the different generations. That’s nice.”

Angela has a four-year-old son with husband Gary, who may be the next generation to take on the chippy. “I am not sure if he will want to work here but it would be lovely to have a fourth generation,” said Angela.

The Kingfisher recently started to phase out plastic forks and containers, replacing them with wood. Angela added: “We like to do our bit for the environment.”

The Kingfisher opens 8am-6pm Monday to Friday, and 8.30am-5.30pm Saturday.
