IT has been a staple of the community for nearly half-a-century, providing trophies and medals for generations of victorious Salfordians–– and the North West Trophy Centre in Swinton has now won the title of this week’s Firm Favourite.

The shop in Chorley Road has been open since 1975, where it was initially run by Len Stables.

Tom Holmes, 62, been running the shop since 2001 and has crafted countless tens of thousands of prizes in that time.

Owner and engraver Mr Holmes said: “My wife Sandra worked here for about 20 years part-time with Len. Then when Len decided to sell, I took redundancy and bought him out, because I knew it was a good little business.

“I’ve always been into sport–– I’ve played football all my life. I’ve coached kids, I was chairman of Swinton Boys Football Club for 20 years and have kept the shop going.

“It’s still going fairly strong and it still earns a living. I hope it’s going to go for another 20 years. My son, Craig, is going to carry it on when I retire- which will be this year or next year.”

Tom has carried out orders for all manner of sporting clubs and had even made props that have been used in Coronation Street.

Some local clubs that Tom has provided for over the years include Barr Hill, De La Salle, Salford Lads Club and Monton Sports Club.

The prices in the shop vary from a few pounds for simple medals to hundreds of pounds for carefully-made trophies.

Customers are able to choose from dozens of designs that can be catered to their needs, with trophies coming in all shapes and sizes.

In addition to trophies and medals, the centre also provides a key-cutting and t-shirt printing service.
