IT has served generations of Salfordians with its services in its 35-year run - and Carl Allen Furnishings is this week’s Firm Favourite.

The family-run furniture business began in 1985 and has provided beds, sofas, carpets, tables and chairs to countless people in the community since.

Jim Cartey, 75, has been in the retail sector for 60 years and set up the store with wife Josie and sons Carl and Alan.

The store’s name was originally registered as Carl Alan - but someone in the registry office assumed it was a surname and corrected it to Allen.

Jim said: “Before I opened the shop I was sales director for a national company that had around 120 stores, so that is where I got a lot of my experience for.

“When we first opened here in Langworthy Road, it was a massive shopping street. On Saturday mornings around here, you couldn’t move, it was smashed.”

But despite the lack of stores in the area now - including six furniture shops among them - Jim has said the business is still going well. Recent years have seen them expand into contract flooring, serving nursing homes, hospitals and national hotels.

Local MP Rebecca Long-Bailey also even recently visited to congratulate them on their longevity.

Jim added: “We had someone come in who said that their dad bought his first three-piece suite from the store. That is one of the things that holds us together. It’s a repeat business.”
